1 Samuel 25

KJV

1  And Samuel8050 died;4191 and all3605 the Israelites3478 were gathered together,6908 and lamented5594 him, and buried6912 him in his house1004 at Ramah.7414 And David1732 arose,6965 and went down3381 to413 the wilderness4057 of Paran.6290

2  And there was a man376 in Maon,4584 whose possessions4639 were in Carmel;3760 and the man376 was very3966 great,1419 and he had three7969 thousand505 sheep,6629 and a thousand505 goats:5795 and he was1961 shearing1494 853 his sheep6629 in Carmel.3760

3  Now the name8034 of the man376 was Nabal;5037 and the name8034 of his wife802 Abigail:26 and she was a woman802 of good2896 understanding,7922 and of a beautiful3303 countenance:8389 but the man376 was churlish7186 and evil7451 in his doings;4611 and he1931 was of the house of Caleb.3612

4  And David1732 heard8085 in the wilderness4057 that3588 Nabal5037 did shear1494 853 his sheep.6629

5  And David1732 sent out7971 ten6235 young men,5288 and David1732 said559 unto the young men,5288 Get you up5927 to Carmel,3760 and go935 to413 Nabal,5037 and greet7592 7965 him in my name:8034

6  And thus3541 shall ye say559 to him that liveth2416 in prosperity, Peace7965 be both to thee,859 and peace7965 be to thine house,1004 and peace7965 be unto all3605 that834 thou hast.

7  And now6258 I have heard8085 that3588 thou hast shearers:1494 now6258 thy shepherds7462 which834 were1961 with5973 us, we hurt3637 them not,3808 neither3808 was there aught3972 missing6485 unto them, all3605 the while3117 they were1961 in Carmel.3760

8  Ask7592 853 thy young men,5288 and they will show5046 thee. Wherefore let the young men5288 find4672 favor2580 in thine eyes:5869 for3588 we come935 in5921 a good2896 day:3117 give,5414 I pray thee,4994 853 whatsoever834 cometh4672 to thine hand3027 unto thy servants,5650 and to thy son1121 David.1732

9  And when David's1732 young men5288 came,935 they spoke1696 to413 Nabal5037 according to all3605 those428 words1697 in the name8034 of David,1732 and ceased.5117

10  And Nabal5037 answered6030 853 David's1732 servants,5650 and said,559 Who4310 is David?1732 and who4310 is the son1121 of Jesse?3448 there be many7231 servants5650 now a days3117 that break away6555 every man376 from4480 6440 his master.113

11  Shall I then take3947 853 my bread,3899 and my water,4325 and my flesh2878 that834 I have killed2873 for my shearers,1494 and give5414 it unto men,376 whom834 I know3045 not3808 whence335 4480 2088 they1992 be?

12  So David's1732 young men5288 turned2015 their way,1870 and went again,7725 and came935 and told5046 him all3605 those428 sayings.1697

13  And David1732 said559 unto his men,376 Gird ye on2296 every man376 853 his sword.2719 And they girded on2296 every man376 853 his sword;2719 and David1732 also1571 girded on2296 853 his sword:2719 and there went up5927 after310 David1732 about four702 hundred3967 men;376 and two hundred3967 abode3427 by5921 the stuff.3627

14  But one259 5288 of the young men4480 5288 told5046 Abigail,26 Nabal's5037 wife,802 saying,559 Behold,2009 David1732 sent7971 messengers4397 out of the wilderness4480 4057 to salute1288 853 our master;113 and he railed5860 on them.

15  But the men376 were very3966 good2896 unto us, and we were not3808 hurt,3637 neither3808 missed6485 we any thing,3972 as long as3605 3117 we were conversant1980 with854 them, when we were1961 in the fields:7704

16  They were1961 a wall2346 unto5921 us both1571 by night3915 and1571 day,3119 all3605 the while3117 we were1961 with5973 them keeping7462 the sheep.6629

17  Now6258 therefore know3045 and consider7200 what4100 thou wilt do;6213 for3588 evil7451 is determined3615 against413 our master,113 and against5921 all3605 his household:1004 for he1931 is such a son1121 of Belial,1100 that a man cannot speak4480 1696 to413 him.

18  Then Abigail26 made haste,4116 and took3947 two hundred3967 loaves,3899 and two8147 bottles5035 of wine,3196 and five2568 sheep6629 ready dressed,6213 and five2568 measures5429 of parched7039 corn, and a hundred3967 clusters of raisins,6778 and two hundred3967 cakes of figs,1690 and laid7760 them on5921 asses.2543

19  And she said559 unto her servants,5288 Go on5674 before6440 me; behold,2005 I come935 after310 you. But she told5046 not3808 her husband376 Nabal.5037

20  And it was1961 so, as she1931 rode7392 on5921 the ass,2543 that she came down3381 by the covert5643 of the hill,2022 and, behold,2009 David1732 and his men376 came down3381 against7125 her; and she met6298 them.

21  Now David1732 had said,559 Surely389 in vain8267 have I kept8104 853 all3605 that834 this2088 fellow hath in the wilderness,4057 so that nothing3808 3972 was missed6485 of all4480 3605 that834 pertained unto him: and he hath requited7725 me evil7451 for8478 good.2896

22  So3541 and more3254 also3541 do6213 God430 unto the enemies341 of David,1732 if518 I leave7604 of all4480 3605 that834 pertain to him by5704 the morning light1242 any that pisseth8366 against the wall.7023

23  And when Abigail26 saw7200 853 David,1732 she hasted,4116 and lighted3381 off4480 5921 the ass,2543 and fell5307 before639 David1732 on5921 her face,6440 and bowed herself7812 to the ground,776

24  And fell5307 at5921 his feet,7272 and said,559 Upon me,589 my lord,113 upon me let this iniquity5771 be: and let thine handmaid,519 I pray thee,4994 speak1696 in thine audience,241 and hear8085 853 the words1697 of thine handmaid.519

25  Let not408 my lord,113 I pray thee,4994 regard7760 853 3820 413 this2088 man376 of Belial,1100 even Nabal:5037 for3588 as his name8034 is, so3651 is he;1931 Nabal5037 is his name,8034 and folly5039 is with5973 him: but I589 thine handmaid519 saw7200 not3808 853 the young men5288 of my lord,113 whom834 thou didst send.7971

26  Now6258 therefore, my lord,113 as the LORD3068 liveth,2416 and as thy soul5315 liveth,2416 seeing834 the LORD3068 hath withheld4513 thee from coming4480 935 to shed blood,1818 and from avenging3467 thyself with thine own hand,3027 now6258 let thine enemies,341 and they that seek1245 evil7451 to413 my lord,113 be1961 as Nabal.5037

27  And now6258 this2063 blessing1293 which834 thine handmaid8198 hath brought935 unto my lord,113 let it even be given5414 unto the young men5288 that follow1980 7272 my lord.113

28  I pray thee,4994 forgive5375 the trespass6588 of thine handmaid:519 for3588 the LORD3068 will certainly make6213 6213 my lord113 a sure539 house;1004 because3588 my lord113 fighteth3898 the battles4421 of the LORD,3068 and evil7451 hath not3808 been found4672 in thee all thy days.4480 3117

29  Yet a man120 is risen6965 to pursue7291 thee, and to seek1245 853 thy soul:5315 but the soul5315 of my lord113 shall be1961 bound6887 in the bundle6872 of life2416 with854 the LORD3068 thy God;430 and the souls5315 of thine enemies,341 them shall he sling out,7049 as out of the middle8432 of a sling.7050

30  And it shall come to pass,1961 when3588 the LORD3068 shall have done6213 to my lord113 according to all3605 853 the good2896 that834 he hath spoken1696 concerning5921 thee, and shall have appointed6680 thee ruler5057 over5921 Israel;3478

31  That this2063 shall be1961 no3808 grief6330 unto thee, nor offense4383 of heart3820 unto my lord,113 either that thou hast shed8210 blood1818 causeless,2600 or that my lord113 hath avenged3467 himself: but when the LORD3068 shall have dealt well3190 with my lord,113 then remember2142 853 thine handmaid.519

32  And David1732 said559 to Abigail,26 Blessed1288 be the LORD3068 God430 of Israel,3478 which834 sent7971 thee this2088 day3117 to meet7125 me:

33  And blessed1288 be thy advice,2940 and blessed1288 be thou,859 which834 hast kept3607 me this2088 day3117 from coming4480 935 to shed blood,1818 and from avenging3467 myself with mine own hand.3027

34  For in very deed,199 as the LORD3068 God430 of Israel3478 liveth,2416 which834 hath kept me back4513 from hurting4480 7489 thee, except3588 3884 thou hadst hasted4116 and come935 to meet7125 me, surely3588 there had not518 been left3498 unto Nabal5037 by5704 the morning1242 light216 any that pisseth8366 against the wall.7023

35  So David1732 received3947 of her hand4480 3027 853 that which834 she had brought935 him, and said559 unto her, Go up5927 in peace7965 to thine house;1004 see,7200 I have hearkened8085 to thy voice,6963 and have accepted5375 thy person.6440

36  And Abigail26 came935 to413 Nabal;5037 and, behold,2009 he held a feast4960 in his house,1004 like the feast4960 of a king;4428 and Nabal's5037 heart3820 was merry2896 within5921 him, for he1931 was very5704 3966 drunken:7910 wherefore she told5046 him nothing,3808 1697 less6996 or more,1419 until5704 the morning1242 light.216

37  But it came to pass1961 in the morning,1242 when the wine3196 was gone out3318 of Nabal,4480 5037 and his wife802 had told5046 him 853 these428 things,1697 that his heart3820 died4191 within7130 him, and he1931 became1961 as a stone.68

38  And it came to pass1961 about ten6235 days3117 after, that the LORD3068 smote5062 853 Nabal,5037 that he died.4191

39  And when David1732 heard8085 that3588 Nabal5037 was dead,4191 he said,559 Blessed1288 be the LORD,3068 that834 hath pleaded7378 853 the cause7379 of my reproach2781 from the hand4480 3027 of Nabal,5037 and hath kept2820 his servant5650 from evil:4480 7451 for the LORD3068 hath returned7725 the wickedness7451 of Nabal5037 upon his own head.7218 And David1732 sent7971 and communed1696 with Abigail,26 to take3947 her to him to wife.802

40  And when the servants5650 of David1732 were come935 to413 Abigail26 to Carmel,3760 they spoke1696 unto413 her, saying,559 David1732 sent7971 us unto413 thee, to take3947 thee to him to wife.802

41  And she arose,6965 and bowed herself7812 on her face639 to the earth,776 and said,559 Behold,2009 let thine handmaid519 be a servant8198 to wash7364 the feet7272 of the servants5650 of my lord.113

42  And Abigail26 hasted,4116 and arose,6965 and rode7392 upon5921 an ass,2543 with five2568 damsels5291 of hers that went1980 after7272 her; and she went1980 after310 the messengers4397 of David,1732 and became1961 his wife.802

43  David1732 also took3947 Ahinoam293 of Jezreel;4480 3157 and they were1961 also1571 both8147 of them his wives.802

44  But Saul7586 had given5414 853 Michal4324 his daughter,1323 David's1732 wife,802 to Phalti6406 the son1121 of Laish,3919 which834 was of Gallim.4480 1554

Vul

Consurgensque David descendit in desertum Pharan.

13 Tunc ait David pueris suis: Accingatur unusquisque gladio suo.
