1  When³⁵⁸⁸ thou goest out³³¹⁸ to battle⁴⁴²¹ against⁵⁹²¹ thine enemies,³⁴¹ and seest⁷²⁰⁰ horses,⁵⁴⁸³ and chariots,⁷³⁹³ and a people⁵⁹⁷¹ more⁷²²⁷ than⁴⁴⁸⁰ thou, be not afraid^{3372 3808} of⁴⁴⁸⁰ them: for³⁵⁸⁸ the LORD³⁰⁶⁸ thy God⁴³⁰ is with⁵⁹⁷³ thee, which brought thee up⁵⁹²⁷ out of the land^{4480 776} of Egypt.⁴⁷¹⁴

2  And it shall be,¹⁹⁶¹ when ye are come nigh⁷¹²⁶ unto⁴¹³ the battle,⁴⁴²¹ that the priest³⁵⁴⁸ shall approach⁵⁰⁶⁶ and speak¹⁶⁹⁶ unto⁴¹³ the people,⁵⁹⁷¹

3  And shall say⁵⁵⁹ unto⁴¹³ them, Hear,⁸⁰⁸⁵ O Israel,³⁴⁷⁸ ye⁸⁵⁹ approach⁷¹³¹ this day³¹¹⁷ unto battle⁴⁴²¹ against⁵⁹²¹ your enemies:³⁴¹ let not⁴⁰⁸ your hearts³⁸²⁴ faint,⁷⁴⁰¹ fear³³⁷² not,⁴⁰⁸ and do not⁴⁰⁸ tremble,²⁶⁴⁸ neither⁴⁰⁸ be ye terrified⁶²⁰⁶ because of^{4480 6440} them;

4  For³⁵⁸⁸ the LORD³⁰⁶⁸ your God⁴³⁰ is he that goeth¹⁹⁸⁰ with⁵⁹⁷³ you, to fight³⁸⁹⁸ for you against⁵⁹⁷³ your enemies,³⁴¹ to save³⁴⁶⁷ you.

5  And the officers⁷⁸⁶⁰ shall speak¹⁶⁹⁶ unto⁴¹³ the people,⁵⁹⁷¹ saying,⁵⁵⁹ What⁴³¹⁰ man³⁷⁶ is there that⁸³⁴ hath built¹¹²⁹ a new²³¹⁹ house,¹⁰⁰⁴ and hath not³⁸⁰⁸ dedicated²⁵⁹⁶ it? let him go¹⁹⁸⁰ and return⁷⁷²⁵ to his house,¹⁰⁰⁴ lest⁶⁴³⁵ he die⁴¹⁹¹ in the battle,⁴⁴²¹ and another³¹² man³⁷⁶ dedicate²⁵⁹⁶ it.

6  And what⁴³¹⁰ man³⁷⁶ is he that⁸³⁴ hath planted⁵¹⁹³ a vineyard,³⁷⁵⁴ and hath not³⁸⁰⁸ yet eaten²⁴⁹⁰ of it? let him also go¹⁹⁸⁰ and return⁷⁷²⁵ unto his house,¹⁰⁰⁴ lest⁶⁴³⁵ he die⁴¹⁹¹ in the battle,⁴⁴²¹ and another³¹² man³⁷⁶ eat²⁴⁹⁰ of it.

7  And what⁴³¹⁰ man³⁷⁶ is there that⁸³⁴ hath betrothed⁷⁸¹ a wife,⁸⁰² and hath not³⁸⁰⁸ taken³⁹⁴⁷ her? let him go¹⁹⁸⁰ and return⁷⁷²⁵ unto his house,¹⁰⁰⁴ lest⁶⁴³⁵ he die⁴¹⁹¹ in the battle,⁴⁴²¹ and another³¹² man³⁷⁶ take³⁹⁴⁷ her.

8  And the officers⁷⁸⁶⁰ shall speak¹⁶⁹⁶ further³²⁵⁴ unto⁴¹³ the people,⁵⁹⁷¹ and they shall say,⁵⁵⁹ What⁴³¹⁰ man³⁷⁶ is there that is fearful³³⁷³ and fainthearted?^{7390 3824} let him go¹⁹⁸⁰ and return⁷⁷²⁵ unto his house,¹⁰⁰⁴ lest^{3808 853} his brethren's²⁵¹ heart³⁸²⁴ faint⁴⁵⁴⁹ as well as his heart.³⁸²⁴

9  And it shall be,¹⁹⁶¹ when the officers⁷⁸⁶⁰ have made an end³⁶¹⁵ of speaking¹⁶⁹⁶ unto⁴¹³ the people,⁵⁹⁷¹ that they shall make⁶⁴⁸⁵ captains⁸²⁶⁹ of the armies⁶⁶³⁵ to lead⁷²¹⁸ the people.⁵⁹⁷¹

10  When³⁵⁸⁸ thou comest nigh⁷¹²⁶ unto⁴¹³ a city⁵⁸⁹² to fight³⁸⁹⁸ against⁵⁹²¹ it, then proclaim⁷¹²¹ peace⁷⁹⁶⁵ unto⁴¹³ it.

11  And it shall be,¹⁹⁶¹ if⁵¹⁸ it make thee answer⁶⁰³⁰ of peace,⁷⁹⁶⁵ and open⁶⁶⁰⁵ unto thee, then it shall be,¹⁹⁶¹ that all³⁶⁰⁵ the people⁵⁹⁷¹ that is found⁴⁶⁷² therein shall be¹⁹⁶¹ tributaries⁴⁵²² unto thee, and they shall serve⁵⁶⁴⁷ thee.

12  And if⁵¹⁸ it will make no peace^{7999 3808} with⁵⁹⁷³ thee, but will make⁶²¹³ war⁴⁴²¹ against⁵⁹⁷³ thee, then thou shalt besiege^{6696 5921} it:

13  And when the LORD³⁰⁶⁸ thy God⁴³⁰ hath delivered⁵⁴¹⁴ it into thine hands,³⁰²⁷ thou shalt smite^{5221 853} every³⁶⁰⁵ male²¹³⁸ thereof with the edge⁶³¹⁰ of the sword:²⁷¹⁹

14  But⁷⁵³⁵ the women,⁸⁰² and the little ones,²⁹⁴⁵ and the cattle,⁹²⁹ and all³⁶⁰⁵ that⁸³⁴ is¹⁹⁶¹ in the city,⁵⁸⁹² even all³⁶⁰⁵ the spoil⁷⁹⁹⁸ thereof, shalt thou take⁹⁶² unto thyself; and thou shalt eat^{398 853} the spoil⁷⁹⁹⁸ of thine enemies,³⁴¹ which⁸³⁴ the LORD³⁰⁶⁸ thy God⁴³⁰ hath given⁵⁴¹⁴ thee.

15  Thus³⁶⁵¹ shalt thou do⁶²¹³ unto all³⁶⁰⁵ the cities⁵⁸⁹² which are very³⁹⁶⁶ far off⁷³⁵⁰ from⁴⁴⁸⁰ thee, which⁸³⁴ are not³⁸⁰⁸ of the cities^{4480 5892} of these⁴²⁸ nations.¹⁴⁷¹

16  But⁷⁵³⁵ of the cities^{4480 5892} of these⁴²⁸ people,⁵⁹⁷¹ which⁸³⁴ the LORD³⁰⁶⁸ thy God⁴³⁰ doth give⁵⁴¹⁴ thee for an inheritance,⁵¹⁵⁹ thou shalt save alive²⁴²¹ nothing^{3808 3605} that breatheth:⁵³⁹⁷

17  But³⁵⁸⁸ thou shalt utterly destroy^{2763 2763} them; namely, the Hittites,²⁸⁵⁰ and the Amorites,⁵⁶⁷ the Canaanites,³⁶⁶⁹ and the Perizzites,⁶⁵²² the Hivites,²³⁴⁰ and the Jebusites;²⁹⁸³ as⁸³⁴ the LORD³⁰⁶⁸ thy God⁴³⁰ hath commanded⁶⁶⁸⁰ thee:

18  That^{4616 834} they teach³⁹²⁵ you not³⁸⁰⁸ to do⁶²¹³ after all³⁶⁰⁵ their abominations,⁸⁴⁴¹ which⁸³⁴ they have done⁶²¹³ unto their gods;⁴³⁰ so should ye sin²³⁹⁸ against the LORD³⁰⁶⁸ your God.⁴³⁰

19  When³⁵⁸⁸ thou shalt besiege^{6696 413} a city⁵⁸⁹² a long⁷²²⁷ time,³¹¹⁷ in making war³⁸⁹⁸ against⁵⁹²¹ it to take⁸⁶¹⁰ it, thou shalt not³⁸⁰⁸ destroy^{7843 853} the trees⁶⁰⁸⁶ thereof by forcing⁵⁰⁸⁰ an axe¹⁶³¹ against⁵⁹²¹ them: for³⁵⁸⁸ thou mayest eat³⁹⁸ of⁴⁴⁸⁰ them, and thou shalt not³⁸⁰⁸ cut them down^{3772 853} (for³⁵⁸⁸ the tree⁶⁰⁸⁶ of the field⁷⁷⁰⁴ is man's¹²⁰ life) to employ^{935 4480 6440} them in the siege:⁴⁶⁹²

20  Only⁷⁵³⁵ the trees⁶⁰⁸⁶ which⁸³⁴ thou knowest³⁰⁴⁵ that³⁵⁸⁸ they¹⁹³¹ be not³⁸⁰⁸ trees⁶⁰⁸⁶ for meat,³⁹⁷⁸ thou shalt destroy⁷⁸⁴³ and cut them down;³⁷⁷² and thou shalt build¹¹²⁹ bulwarks⁴⁶⁹² against⁵⁹²¹ the city⁵⁸⁹² that^{834 1931} maketh⁶²¹³ war⁴⁴²¹ with⁵⁹⁷³ thee, until⁵⁷⁰⁴ it be subdued.³³⁸¹

1 ἐὰν δὲ ἐξέλθῃς εἰς πόλεμον ἐπὶ τοὺς ἐχθρούς σου καὶ ἴδῃς ἵππον καὶ ἀναβάτην καὶ λαὸν πλείονά σου οὐ φοβηθήσῃ ἀπ᾽ αὐτῶν ὅτι κύριος ὁ θεός σου μετὰ σοῦ ὁ ἀναβιβάσας σε ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου

2 καὶ ἔσται ὅταν ἐγγίσῃς τῷ πολέμῳ καὶ προσεγγίσας ὁ ἱερεὺς λαλήσει τῷ λαῷ

3 καὶ ἐρεῖ πρὸς αὐτούς ἄκουε Ισραηλ ὑμεῖς προσπορεύεσθε σήμερον εἰς πόλεμον ἐπὶ τοὺς ἐχθροὺς ὑμῶν μὴ ἐκλυέσθω ἡ καρδία ὑμῶν μὴ φοβεῖσθε μηδὲ θραύεσθε μηδὲ ἐκκλίνητε ἀπὸ προσώπου αὐτῶν

4 ὅτι κύριος ὁ θεὸς ὑμῶν ὁ προπορευόμενος μεθ᾽ ὑμῶν συνεκπολεμῆσαι ὑμῖν τοὺς ἐχθροὺς ὑμῶν διασῶσαι ὑμᾶς

5 καὶ λαλήσουσιν οἱ γραμματεῖς πρὸς τὸν λαὸν λέγοντες τίς ὁ ἄνθρωπος ὁ οἰκοδομήσας οἰκίαν καινὴν καὶ οὐκ ἐνεκαίνισεν αὐτήν πορευέσθω καὶ ἀποστραφήτω εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν αὐτοῦ μὴ ἀποθάνῃ ἐν τῷ πολέμῳ καὶ ἄνθρωπος ἕτερος ἐγκαινιεῖ αὐτήν

6 καὶ τίς ὁ ἄνθρωπος ὅστις ἐφύτευσεν ἀμπελῶνα καὶ οὐκ εὐφράνθη ἐξ αὐτοῦ πορευέσθω καὶ ἀποστραφήτω εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν αὐτοῦ μὴ ἀποθάνῃ ἐν τῷ πολέμῳ καὶ ἄνθρωπος ἕτερος εὐφρανθήσεται ἐξ αὐτοῦ

7 καὶ τίς ὁ ἄνθρωπος ὅστις μεμνήστευται γυναῖκα καὶ οὐκ ἔλαβεν αὐτήν πορευέσθω καὶ ἀποστραφήτω εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν αὐτοῦ μὴ ἀποθάνῃ ἐν τῷ πολέμῳ καὶ ἄνθρωπος ἕτερος λήμψεται αὐτήν

8 καὶ προσθήσουσιν οἱ γραμματεῖς λαλῆσαι πρὸς τὸν λαὸν καὶ ἐροῦσιν τίς ὁ ἄνθρωπος ὁ φοβούμενος καὶ δειλὸς τῇ καρδίᾳ πορευέσθω καὶ ἀποστραφήτω εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν αὐτοῦ ἵνα μὴ δειλιάνῃ τὴν καρδίαν τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ ὥσπερ ἡ αὐτοῦ

9 καὶ ἔσται ὅταν παύσωνται οἱ γραμματεῖς λαλοῦντες πρὸς τὸν λαόν καὶ καταστήσουσιν ἄρχοντας τῆς στρατιᾶς προηγουμένους τοῦ λαοῦ

10 ἐὰν δὲ προσέλθῃς πρὸς πόλιν ἐκπολεμῆσαι αὐτήν καὶ ἐκκαλέσῃ αὐτοὺς μετ᾽ εἰρήνης

11 ἐὰν μὲν εἰρηνικὰ ἀποκριθῶσίν σοι καὶ ἀνοίξωσίν σοι ἔσται πᾶς ὁ λαὸς οἱ εὑρεθέντες ἐν αὐτῇ ἔσονταί σοι φορολόγητοι καὶ ὑπήκοοί σου

12 ἐὰν δὲ μὴ ὑπακούσωσίν σοι καὶ ποιήσωσιν πρὸς σὲ πόλεμον περικαθιεῖς αὐτήν

13 καὶ παραδώσει αὐτὴν κύριος ὁ θεός σου εἰς τὰς χεῖράς σου καὶ πατάξεις πᾶν ἀρσενικὸν αὐτῆς ἐν φόνῳ μαχαίρας

14 πλὴν τῶν γυναικῶν καὶ τῆς ἀποσκευῆς καὶ πάντα τὰ κτήνη καὶ πάντα ὅσα ἂν ὑπάρχῃ ἐν τῇ πόλει καὶ πᾶσαν τὴν ἀπαρτίαν προνομεύσεις σεαυτῷ καὶ φάγῃ πᾶσαν τὴν προνομὴν τῶν ἐχθρῶν σου ὧν κύριος ὁ θεός σου δίδωσίν σοι

15 οὕτως ποιήσεις πάσας τὰς πόλεις τὰς μακρὰν οὔσας ἀπὸ σοῦ σφόδρα αἳ οὐχὶ ἐκ τῶν πόλεων τῶν ἐθνῶν τούτων

16 ἰδοὺ δὲ ἀπὸ τῶν πόλεων τῶν ἐθνῶν τούτων ὧν κύριος ὁ θεός σου δίδωσίν σοι κληρονομεῖν τὴν γῆν αὐτῶν οὐ ζωγρήσετε ἀπ᾽ αὐτῶν πᾶν ἐμπνέον

17 ἀλλ᾽ ἢ ἀναθέματι ἀναθεματιεῖτε αὐτούς τὸν Χετταῖον καὶ Αμορραῖον καὶ Χαναναῖον καὶ Φερεζαῖον καὶ Ευαῖον καὶ Ιεβουσαῖον καὶ Γεργεσαῖον ὃν τρόπον ἐνετείλατό σοι κύριος ὁ θεός σου

18 ἵνα μὴ διδάξωσιν ὑμᾶς ποιεῖν πάντα τὰ βδελύγματα αὐτῶν ὅσα ἐποίησαν τοῖς θεοῖς αὐτῶν καὶ ἁμαρτήσεσθε ἐναντίον κυρίου τοῦ θεοῦ ὑμῶν

19 ἐὰν δὲ περικαθίσῃς περὶ πόλιν ἡμέρας πλείους ἐκπολεμῆσαι αὐτὴν εἰς κατάλημψιν αὐτῆς οὐχὶ ἐξολεθρεύσεις τὰ δένδρα αὐτῆς ἐπιβαλεῖν ἐπ᾽ αὐτὰ σίδηρον ἀλλ᾽ ἢ ἀπ᾽ αὐτοῦ φάγῃ αὐτὸ δὲ οὐκ ἐκκόψεις μὴ ἄνθρωπος τὸ ξύλον τὸ ἐν τῷ ἀγρῷ εἰσελθεῖν ἀπὸ προσώπου σου εἰς τὸν χάρακα

20 ἀλλὰ ξύλον ὃ ἐπίστασαι ὅτι οὐ καρπόβρωτόν ἐστιν τοῦτο ἐξολεθρεύσεις καὶ ἐκκόψεις καὶ οἰκοδομήσεις χαράκωσιν ἐπὶ τὴν πόλιν ἥτις ποιεῖ πρὸς σὲ τὸν πόλεμον ἕως ἂν παραδοθῇ

‎1 ‏כִּֽי־תֵצֵ֨א לַמִּלְחָמָ֜ה עַל־אֹיְבֶ֗יךָ וְֽרָאִ֜יתָ ס֤וּס וָרֶ֙כֶב֙ עַ֚ם רַ֣ב מִמְּךָ֔ לֹ֥א תִירָ֖א מֵהֶ֑ם כִּֽי־יְהוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֶ֙יךָ֙ עִמָּ֔ךְ הַמַּֽעַלְךָ֖ מֵאֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃

‎2 ‏וְהָיָ֕ה כְּקָֽרָבְכֶ֖ם אֶל־הַמִּלְחָמָ֑ה וְנִגַּ֥שׁ הַכֹּהֵ֖ן וְדִבֶּ֥ר אֶל־הָעָֽם׃

‎3 ‏וְאָמַ֤ר אֲלֵהֶם֙ שְׁמַ֣ע יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אַתֶּ֨ם קְרֵבִ֥ים הַיּ֛וֹם לַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה עַל־אֹיְבֵיכֶ֑ם אַל־יֵרַ֣ךְ לְבַבְכֶ֗ם אַל־תִּֽירְא֧וּ וְאַֽל־תַּחְפְּז֛וּ וְאַל־תַּֽעַרְצ֖וּ מִפְּנֵיהֶֽם׃

‎4 ‏כִּ֚י יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֔ם הַהֹלֵ֖ךְ עִמָּכֶ֑ם לְהִלָּחֵ֥ם לָכֶ֛ם עִם־אֹיְבֵיכֶ֖ם לְהוֹשִׁ֥יעַ אֶתְכֶֽם׃

‎5 ‏וְדִבְּר֣וּ הַשֹּֽׁטְרִים֮ אֶל־הָעָ֣ם לֵאמֹר֒ מִֽי־הָאִ֞ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֨ר בָּנָ֤ה בַֽיִת־חָדָשׁ֙ וְלֹ֣א חֲנָכ֔וֹ יֵלֵ֖ךְ וְיָשֹׁ֣ב לְבֵית֑וֹ פֶּן־יָמוּת֙ בַּמִּלְחָמָ֔ה וְאִ֥ישׁ אַחֵ֖ר יַחְנְכֶֽנּוּ׃

‎6 ‏וּמִֽי־הָאִ֞ישׁ אֲשֶׁר־נָטַ֥ע כֶּ֙רֶם֙ וְלֹ֣א חִלְּל֔וֹ יֵלֵ֖ךְ וְיָשֹׁ֣ב לְבֵית֑וֹ פֶּן־יָמוּת֙ בַּמִּלְחָמָ֔ה וְאִ֥ישׁ אַחֵ֖ר יְחַלְּלֶֽנּוּ׃

‎7 ‏וּמִֽי־הָאִ֞ישׁ אֲשֶׁר־אֵרַ֤שׂ אִשָּׁה֙ וְלֹ֣א לְקָחָ֔הּ יֵלֵ֖ךְ וְיָשֹׁ֣ב לְבֵית֑וֹ פֶּן־יָמוּת֙ בַּמִּלְחָמָ֔ה וְאִ֥ישׁ אַחֵ֖ר יִקָּחֶֽנָּה׃

‎8 ‏וְיָסְפ֣וּ הַשֹּׁטְרִים֮ לְדַבֵּ֣ר אֶל־הָעָם֒ וְאָמְר֗וּ מִי־הָאִ֤ישׁ הַיָּרֵא֙ וְרַ֣ךְ הַלֵּבָ֔ב יֵלֵ֖ךְ וְיָשֹׁ֣ב לְבֵית֑וֹ וְלֹ֥א יִמַּ֛ס אֶת־לְבַ֥ב אֶחָ֖יו כִּלְבָבֽוֹ׃

‎9 ‏וְהָיָ֛ה כְּכַלֹּ֥ת הַשֹּׁטְרִ֖ים לְדַבֵּ֣ר אֶל־הָעָ֑ם וּפָ֥קְד֛וּ³ שָׂרֵ֥י צְבָא֖וֹת בְּרֹ֥אשׁ הָעָֽם׃ ס

‎10 ‏כִּֽי־תִקְרַ֣ב אֶל־עִ֔יר לְהִלָּחֵ֖ם עָלֶ֑יהָ וְקָרָ֥אתָ אֵלֶ֖יהָ לְשָׁלֽוֹם׃

‎11 ‏וְהָיָה֙ אִם־שָׁל֣וֹם תַּֽעַנְךָ֔ וּפָתְחָ֖ה לָ֑ךְ וְהָיָ֞ה כָּל־הָעָ֣ם הַנִּמְצָא־בָ֗הּ יִהְי֥וּ לְךָ֛ לָמַ֖ס וַעֲבָדֽוּךָ׃

‎12 ‏וְאִם־לֹ֤א תַשְׁלִים֙ עִמָּ֔ךְ וְעָשְׂתָ֥ה עִמְּךָ֖ מִלְחָמָ֑ה וְצַרְתָּ֖ עָלֶֽיהָ׃

‎13 ‏וּנְתָנָ֛הּ יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ בְּיָדֶ֑ךָ וְהִכִּיתָ֥ אֶת־כָּל־זְכוּרָ֖הּ לְפִי־חָֽרֶב׃

‎14 ‏רַ֣ק הַ֠נָּשִׁים וְהַטַּ֨ף וְהַבְּהֵמָ֜ה וְכֹל֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר יִהְיֶ֥ה בָעִ֛יר כָּל־שְׁלָלָ֖הּ תָּבֹ֣ז לָ֑ךְ וְאָֽכַלְתָּ֙ אֶת־שְׁלַ֣ל אֹיְבֶ֔יךָ אֲשֶׁ֥ר נָתַ֛ן יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ לָֽךְ׃

‎15 ‏כֵּ֤ן תַּעֲשֶׂה֙ לְכָל־הֶ֣עָרִ֔ים הָרְחֹקֹ֥ת מִמְּךָ֖ מְאֹ֑ד אֲשֶׁ֛ר לֹא־מֵעָרֵ֥י הַגּֽוֹיִם־הָאֵ֖לֶּה הֵֽנָּה׃

‎16 ‏רַ֗ק מֵעָרֵ֤י הָֽעַמִּים֙ הָאֵ֔לֶּה אֲשֶׁר֙ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ נֹתֵ֥ן לְךָ֖ נַחֲלָ֑ה לֹ֥א תְחַיֶּ֖ה כָּל־נְשָׁמָֽה׃

‎17 ‏כִּֽי־הַחֲרֵ֣ם תַּחֲרִימֵ֗ם הַחִתִּ֤י וְהָאֱמֹרִי֙ הַכְּנַעֲנִ֣י וְהַפְּרִזִּ֔י הַחִוִּ֖י וְהַיְבוּסִ֑י כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר צִוְּךָ֖ יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶֽיךָ׃

‎18 ‏לְמַ֗עַן אֲשֶׁ֨ר לֹֽא־יְלַמְּד֤וּ אֶתְכֶם֙ לַעֲשׂ֔וֹת כְּכֹל֙ תּֽוֹעֲבֹתָ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשׂ֖וּ לֵֽאלֹהֵיהֶ֑ם וַחֲטָאתֶ֖ם לַיהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃ ס

‎19 ‏כִּֽי־תָצ֣וּר אֶל־עִיר֩ יָמִ֨ים רַבִּ֜ים לְֽהִלָּחֵ֧ם עָלֶ֣יהָ לְתָפְשָׂ֗הּ לֹֽא־תַשְׁחִ֤ית אֶת־עֵצָהּ֙ לִנְדֹּ֤חַ עָלָיו֙ גַּרְזֶ֔ן כִּ֚י מִמֶּ֣נּוּ תֹאכֵ֔ל וְאֹת֖וֹ לֹ֣א תִכְרֹ֑ת כִּ֤י הָֽאָדָם֙ עֵ֣ץ הַשָּׂדֶ֔ה לָבֹ֥א מִפָּנֶ֖יךָ בַּמָּצֽוֹר׃

‎20 ‏רַ֞ק עֵ֣ץ אֲשֶׁר־תֵּדַ֗ע כִּֽי־לֹא־עֵ֤ץ מַאֲכָל֙ ה֔וּא אֹת֥וֹ תַשְׁחִ֖ית וְכָרָ֑תָּ וּבָנִ֣יתָ מָצ֗וֹר עַל־הָעִיר֙ אֲשֶׁר־הִ֨וא עֹשָׂ֧ה עִמְּךָ֛ מִלְחָמָ֖ה עַ֥ד רִדְתָּֽהּ׃ פ

Vul

1 Si exieris ad bellum contra hostes tuos, et videris equitatus et currus, et majorem quam tu habeas adversarii exercitus multitudinem, non timebis eos: quia Dominus Deus tuus tecum est, qui eduxit te de terra Ægypti.

2 Appropinquante autem jam prælio, stabit sacerdos ante aciem, et sic loquetur ad populum:

3 Audi, Israël: vos hodie contra inimicos vestros pugnam committitis: non pertimescat cor vestrum, nolite metuere, nolite cedere, nec formidetis eos:

4 quia Dominus Deus vester in medio vestri est, et pro vobis contra adversarios dimicabit, ut eruat vos de periculo.

5 Duces quoque per singulas turmas audiente exercitu proclamabunt: Quis est homo qui ædificavit domum novam, et non dedicavit eam? vadat, et revertatur in domum suam, ne forte moriatur in bello, et alius dedicet eam.

6 Quis est homo qui plantavit vineam, et necdum fecit eam esse communem, de qua vesci omnibus liceat? vadat, et revertatur in domum suam, ne forte moriatur in bello, et alius homo ejus fungatur officio.

7 Quis est homo, qui despondit uxorem, et non accepit eam? vadat, et revertatur in domum suam, ne forte moriatur in bello, et alius homo accipiat eam.

8 His dictis addent reliqua, et loquentur ad populum: Quis est homo formidolosus, et corde pavido? vadat, et revertatur in domum suam, ne pavere faciat corda fratrum suorum, sicut ipse timore perterritus est.

9 Cumque siluerint duces exercitus, et finem loquendi fecerint, unusquisque suos ad bellandum cuneos præparabit.

10 Siquando accesseris ad expugnandam civitatem, offeres ei primum pacem.

11 Si receperit, et aperuerit tibi portas, cunctus populus, qui in ea est, salvabitur, et serviet tibi sub tributo.

12 Sin autem fœdus inire noluerit, et cœperit contra te bellum, oppugnabis eam.

13 Cumque tradiderit Dominus Deus tuus illam in manu tua, percuties omne quod in ea generis masculini est, in ore gladii,

14 absque mulieribus et infantibus, jumentis et ceteris quæ in civitate sunt. Omnem prædam exercitui divides, et comedes de spoliis hostium tuorum, quæ Dominus Deus tuus dederit tibi.

15 Sic facies cunctis civitatibus, quæ a te procul valde sunt, et non sunt de his urbibus, quas in possessionem accepturus es.

16 De his autem civitatibus, quæ dabuntur tibi, nullum omnino permittes vivere:

17 sed interficies in ore gladii, Hethæum videlicet, et Amorrhæum, et Chananæum, Pherezæum, et Hevæum, et Jebusæum, sicut præcepit tibi Dominus Deus tuus:

18 ne forte doceant vos facere cunctas abominationes, quas ipsi operati sunt diis suis, et peccetis in Dominum Deum vestrum.

19 Quando obsederis civitatem multo tempore, et munitionibus circumdederis ut expugnes eam, non succides arbores, de quibus vesci potest, nec securibus per circuitum debes vastare regionem: quoniam lignum est, et non homo, nec potest bellantium contra te augere numerum.

20 Si qua autem ligna non sunt pomifera, sed agrestia, et in ceteros apta usus, succide, et instrue machinas, donec capias civitatem, quæ contra te dimicat.
